Ares a popular name
What is in a name? More specifically, what is in the name ‘Ares’?
Ares, the popular and well known P2P filesharing program developed in the middle of 2002, which operates on its own network and which supports the BitTorrent protocol is named after the Greek God Ares. There is little in common between the God and the filesharing software (though fans might claim that it is Godlike… sigh), but they share a name.
Ares was a God of much energy. If he was alive in the modern world then he would probably be asked to ‘attend anger management classes’ – and if he went he would probably kill everyone there. Vultures and dogs are sacred to him since these are animals that prey upon carrion on the battlefield.
The Ares software isn’t the only batch of technology that manages to share this malevolent God’s name: NASA have used it to brand their rocket that will take crew and cargo to the Moon in 2019.
